Injustice: Gods Among Us – Joystick Superhero’s Unite!

Injustice

If you’re relatively new to console gaming or ‘fighting’ style game genres in general — allow me to give you a little history.  In the year 1976 the first arcade game came out that revolved around the close combat “fighting” technique.  This arcade game was known as Heavyweight Champ and since then led to innovations such as Karate Champ and Street Fighter within the genre.  While you may not be familiar with these titles in particular; it’s platform allowed for the more popular modernized fighting games to be born.  These games, some of which you probably are already familiar with or heard of: ultimately are what they are today because of that silly, well-coded brawler of a game 40 years ago.  Games like Mortal Combat, Tekken, & Virtual Fighter all pull from these older titles and transformed the genre into what we know it as today.

It’s been a few years since a good fighter game has been released, and quite frankly — DC’s latest title Injustice: Gods Among Us Ultimate Edition makes it worth the wait plus some.  Injustice’s first title was released in June of 2013 with the Ultimate Edition ‘expansion’ going live later that year.  Since then, tons of quality of life improvements have been made such as screen tearing and cinematic lagging.  Not to mention, there are also more Hero’s, LAB missions and plenty of content to fight your way through.

To put it bluntly: this game is awesome.  Having played it on the PS4, I can tell you the graphics are amazing and the game-play feels tighter than ever.  In contrast to your standard competing fighter games, this title had a lot to live up to as it is heavily based off the characters written throughout the DC Comics.  We get to fight alongside or against some of our favorite characters such as Batman, the Joker, Wonder Woman, the Green Lantern, Superman & tons more!  To kind of top that off.. they retain a lot of their core character stigmas as well.  What do I mean by that?  Well, wait until you get to run people over with the batmobile or slam people into the core of the earth wearing your superman leotard.  IT. IS. AWESOME!

Though, the game has so much more than flashy looks going for it.  Mechanically, it is very tight.  There are tons and tons of combos to chose from; from defensive to offensive leg sweeps, counter-blocks, full body throws, super specials, mega specs & so much more!  Each character of course has their own unique mega, and they’re all just as powerful.  Additionally, the creators stepped outside the box a little and added some flavor of their own in terms of distinguishing the title from others.  Each character has an HP bar with 2 ‘lives’ for a lack of a better word, and their own clash system. Overall balance for the characters does seem pretty well-rounded, except for a well known few.. *cough* Joker *cough.

Overall, if you’re in the market to try a new game or have been thinking about picking it up — you should.  There is tons to do content wise with DC implementing LAB missions which is essentially 240 unique challenges you can partake in on top of story mode, multiplayer, online ranked matches, leaderboards, etc! There really is no lack of enjoyment here and this will, and probably is; the best current fighter game that is out and will be for a long time.  Let’s see how it holds up when the new Mortal Combat gets released!  Well, till then folks!  Happy gaming!

I haven’t tried Injustice — thank you for this review! I’m a huge superhero fan, so the idea of getting to play with my favorite characters is appealing…since you’ve continued playing have there been any downsides?

I loved this game when I first tried it. I never bought it, just borrowed it. I grew up playing Mortal Kombat so anything like it is right up my ally! I also loved Mortal Kombat vs DC. I agree, this game is definitely worth playing. Each character has its own feel and it is nothing like the old MK’s from the 90’s!

Injustice is a really good game, but at high levels of play it kinda breaks down and isn’t too conducive to an audience watching. It’s made by the same people that did Mortal Kombat and has that same feel to it controls wise. Personally I have always favored the Street Fighter series, but Street Fighter 4 was somewhat of a big letdown for me.

I’m a huge fan of comic books and fighting games so I recommend the game, but what I don’t like about it is that it seems choppy and not fluid.

Thanks for sharing this! I’ve always loved Street Fighter, Tekken and Mortal Combat. I’m looking forward to trying Injustice: Gods Among Us and see if it holds up to the classic : )

Even today I sometimes play older Mortal Combat games and love them! There is always that feeling of melancholy when I play older games. I love Injustice: Gods Among Us because it looks amazing, most heroes are well balanced, and it’s fun to play with most of them. While Superman might be a bit stronger overall, if you are a good player you can kick his ass with Cat Woman anytime. I also dig the LABS missions – I wouldn’t have thought I would like them so much! I absolutely love the fact that you can use the environment to your advantage and I use it all the time – and what about those finishing moves?
